The short answer

The ZOLL AED Plus uses CPR-D-padz adult pads with a 5-year shelf life, Pedi-padz II for children with a 2-year shelf life, and ten CR123 lithium cells that ZOLL says to replace every 5 years on current software. It tests itself weekly and monthly and shows a green check when ready.

Key facts

  • Adult pads: CPR-D-padz (8900-0800-01), 5-year shelf life, with a built-in sensor for CPR coaching.
  • Child pads: Pedi-padz II (8900-0810-01), 2-year shelf life, for children under 8 or under 55 pounds.
  • Battery: ten Duracell CR123 lithium cells (ZOLL set 8000-0807-01), replaced together every 5 years on software 5.32 or later.
  • A green check in the status window means the last self-test passed; a red X or beeping means the AED isn't ready.
  • No FDA recall of the AED Plus itself since 2009; a 2017 recall covered third-party pads made for it.

ZOLL AED Plus at a glance

The ZOLL AED Plus is a public-access AED from ZOLL Medical, sold in a semi-automatic version and a fully automatic one. It is still on sale, and the FDA approved both versions under its current premarket rules in 2017.

Both versions use the same pads, batteries and self-tests. The AED Plus coaches CPR as well as shocking: with CPR-D-padz on the chest, a sensor measures how fast and how deep each compression is, and Real CPR Help prompts the rescuer to push harder or keep pace with a metronome. That feature is for adults only.

Federal device-tracking rules apply to defibrillators, so ZOLL asks owners to tell it in writing if an AED Plus is sold, donated, lost, stolen or destroyed.

AED Plus (semi-automatic) and Fully Automatic AED Plus: how they differ

  • AED Plus (semi-automatic): When a shock is advised, the shock button flashes and the rescuer presses it.
  • Fully Automatic AED Plus: Gives the shock on its own after a spoken countdown, with no button to press. It uses the same pads, batteries and self-tests.

Other ZOLL models we cover: ZOLL AED 3 and ZOLL AED Pro.

ZOLL AED Plus pads

The ZOLL AED Plus uses CPR-D-padz, a one-piece adult pad set with a CPR sensor built in. ZOLL gives them a 5-year shelf life; replace them by the date on the package and after every use.

CPR-D-padz (part 8900-0800-01) cover both pad positions in one piece and carry the sensor that Real CPR Help needs. The AED Plus also accepts ZOLL's Stat-padz II (8900-0801-01), adult pads without the sensor, but then there is no CPR feedback. ZOLL's CPR Uni-padz, made for the AED 3, will also plug in, but only as adult pads and again without Real CPR Help.

Keep the pad cable plugged into the AED at all times. If the pads are unplugged, the next self-test fails and the status window shows a red X. Pads are single-use: after a rescue, fit a new package and plug it in before the AED goes back on the wall.

Using the ZOLL AED Plus on children

Yes. With Pedi-padz II plugged in, the ZOLL AED Plus switches to child rhythm analysis and lower shock energy for children under 8 or under 55 pounds, as long as the unit is marked for adult and pediatric use.

Use Pedi-padz II (part 8900-0810-01) for a child younger than 8 or lighter than 55 pounds (25 kg), and don't delay to work out the child's exact age or weight. The AED Plus recognizes them when they're plugged in and lowers its shock energy from 120, 150 and 200 joules to 50, 70 and 85 joules. There is no key or switch to set.

Two cautions from ZOLL. Not every AED Plus can treat children: a unit without the adult-and-child symbol needs ZOLL's Pediatric Upgrade Kit before Pedi-padz II will work. And don't use CPR-D-padz on a child under 8. Pedi-padz II have a 2-year shelf life, much shorter than the adult pads, so give them their own reminder.

For the general rules on child pads, ages and placement, see our guide to pediatric AED pads.

ZOLL AED Plus battery

The ZOLL AED Plus runs on ten Duracell CR123 lithium cells instead of a battery pack. On software 5.32 or later, ZOLL says to replace all ten every 5 years, or sooner if the AED asks.

ZOLL sells the ten cells as a set, part 8000-0807-01, and says to use Duracell cells only: other brands can make the AED charge much more slowly. Install the cells within a year of the manufacture date printed on each one, replace all ten at once, and press the Battery Reset Button inside the compartment when the AED asks. Press it only for a full set of new cells.

A new set typically gives about 5 years of standby with weekly self-tests, or around 225 shocks at full energy. Units running software older than 5.32 need new cells every 3 years, whatever the self-tests say, and ZOLL suggests a dated note by the On/Off button as a reminder. When the cells run low, the AED beeps once a minute while it's off, says CHANGE BATTERIES when it's on and shows a red X; at that point about 9 shocks are typically left.

How other models compare is in our AED battery replacement guide.

ZOLL AED Plus part numbers and shelf life

These are the parts an AED Plus owner replaces, with ZOLL's part numbers and shelf lives. Pads and batteries are model-specific, so check the number before you order.

ZOLL doesn't say whether its pad shelf lives count from the manufacture date, so the date printed on the package is the one to track.

ZOLL AED Plus self-test and status indicator

The ZOLL AED Plus tests itself every 7 days by default and runs a full-energy test once a month. A green check in the status window means it passed; a red X or beeping means it needs attention.

Besides the weekly check, which an administrator can set to run every 1 to 7 days, the AED Plus tests itself whenever batteries go in and each time it's turned on. The monthly test charges and discharges at full 200-joule energy and needs software 5.32 or later. The tests cover battery capacity, the pad connection, the ECG and shock circuits, the processor and software, the CPR sensor and the voice prompts.

The status window sits on the left of the handle. To run a test yourself, hold the On/Off button for 5 seconds. ZOLL says not to put the AED in service if it shows a red X or is beeping.

If the indicator ever shows a problem, our guide to AED self-test failures and status lights covers what to do first.

ZOLL AED Plus maintenance checklist

ZOLL's routine checks for the AED Plus come down to the status window, the pad and battery dates, the pad connection and the rescue supplies. Check them at least monthly, and after every use.

  • The status window shows a green check, not a red X, and the AED isn't beeping.
  • The CPR-D-padz package is sealed and within its date, and the pad cable is plugged into the AED.
  • Any Pedi-padz II on hand are sealed and within their date.
  • The battery replacement date hasn't passed (5 years on software 5.32 or later, 3 years on older software).
  • The case is clean and undamaged, and the AED is stored within ZOLL's temperature range.
  • Rescue supplies are with the AED: a razor, a CPR mask, gloves and a spare set of batteries.

After the ZOLL AED Plus is used

  1. Clean the AED with a soft damp cloth and 90% isopropyl alcohol, soap and water, or a weak bleach mix.
  2. Fit a new pad package and plug in its cable.
  3. Check the battery and replace the cells if the AED asks.
  4. Restock the rescue supplies and confirm the status window shows a green check.

ZOLL AED Plus recalls

The FDA's recall database shows no recall of the ZOLL AED Plus itself since 2009, and that one is closed. A 2017 recall covered another company's pads sold for the AED Plus.

How AED Log tracks the ZOLL AED Plus

In AED Log you pick the ZOLL AED Plus from the built-in catalog, record its pads and battery with their lot numbers and dates, and get a warning before either expires, plus a monthly inspection reminder.

Each pad set and battery is its own record with its own expiration date, so a pad set or battery never lapses unnoticed. Choose the part from the catalog and its shelf life fills in the expiration date for you; you can always type the date printed on the package instead. Alerts go out by email, Slack, Teams or Discord to the people responsible for that site, and the monthly inspection checklist asks about the status indicator, the pads and the battery. See pad and battery expiration tracking and AED management for more, or see every AED model.
