What AED medical direction is (and why some states require it)
AED medical direction, also called AED medical oversight, is the oversight of an AED program by a licensed physician, who typically authorizes the program, reviews its procedures and training, and reviews each time an AED is used.
Some states make physician medical direction a requirement for an AED program; most don't mention it. Requirements differ from state to state, so check your own state's AED law before you decide.
States that require physician medical direction
The AED law data in AED Log lists nine states that require physician medical direction for an AED program:
Laws change, and this list is a summary, not legal advice. Read your state's AED law and the current statute before you rely on it.
How it works in AED Log
You buy medical direction as an annual license for each AED, assign it to the unit, and AED Log keeps the physician's letter and its renewal date on that AED.
Buy licenses
Buy medical direction licenses on the billing page, one per AED, with your plan or at any time after.
Assign them to AEDs
Assign each license to an AED when you buy it, or keep licenses in a pool and assign them later.
The letter is filed for you
Once a license is fulfilled, the physician's oversight letter is stored on that AED's documents, with its expiration set to the license term.
Renewal is tracked
The covered AED shows a medical direction badge, and the letter's expiration feeds the alerts and the calendar before it's due.
Medical direction pricing
Medical direction is $65 per AED per year, on top of your AED plan.
Each license is an annual subscription for one AED, renewed each year against your saved payment method. Buying licenses for all your AEDs at once keeps them on one renewal date.
Medical direction vs. a prescription vs. EMS registration
They are three different things: medical direction is ongoing physician oversight of the program, a prescription is the physician's order to buy an AED, and EMS registration tells local emergency services where your AEDs are.
Medical direction: ongoing oversight of an AED program by a licensed physician.
AED prescription: a physician's order that lets you buy an AED. Most AED models are sold by prescription.
EMS registration: telling local emergency medical services or a state registry where your AEDs are, which some states require.
