The short answer

The ZOLL AED Pro uses CPR-D-padz adult pads with a 5-year shelf life, Pedi-padz II for children with a 2-year shelf life, and a disposable lithium battery pack (8000-0860-01) rated for 5 years of standby, or a rechargeable pack. It tests itself daily by default and shows a green check when it's ready.

Key facts

  • Adult pads: CPR-D-padz (8900-0800-01), 5-year shelf life, with a sensor for Real CPR Help.
  • Also fits: CPR Stat-padz (8900-0402 single, 8900-0400 8-pack), 24-month shelf life, and Stat-padz II (8900-0801-01).
  • Child pads: Pedi-padz II (8900-0810-01), 2-year shelf life, for patients under 8 or under 55 pounds.
  • Battery: disposable lithium pack 8000-0860-01 with a 5-year standby life; rechargeable packs need a recharge or test every 90 days.
  • One FDA recall, from 2019, for a possible failure to deliver energy; the FDA still lists it as open.

ZOLL AED Pro at a glance

The ZOLL AED Pro is a professional AED that shows the patient's ECG and can be built for semi-automatic use, manual use or both. ZOLL still lists it, and the FDA approved it under its current premarket rules in 2017.

ZOLL builds each AED Pro to run in one of three ways. In semi-automatic mode, meant for trained rescuers, it analyzes the rhythm and charges, and the rescuer has 30 seconds from full charge to press the shock button; after that it disarms and goes back to analyzing. Manual mode is only for medical staff trained in advanced life support. The override build runs semi-automatically but lets a professional switch to manual, which ZOLL says opens extra features such as heart rate displays.

The AED Pro can also monitor the heart through a 3-lead ECG cable. With CPR-D-padz or CPR Stat-padz attached, Real CPR Help measures compression rate and depth, and an optional filter called See-Thru CPR shows an approximate ECG while compressions continue. ZOLL gives the AED Pro an expected service life of 5 years.

Semi-automatic AED Pro, Manual AED Pro and AED Pro with manual override: how they differ

  • Semi-automatic AED Pro: For trained rescuers: the AED analyzes and charges, and the rescuer presses the shock button within 30 seconds of full charge.
  • Manual AED Pro: Runs in manual mode only, which ZOLL limits to medical staff trained in advanced life support.
  • AED Pro with manual override: Runs as a semi-automatic AED, but a professional can switch to manual mode for features such as heart rate displays.

Other ZOLL models we cover: ZOLL AED Plus and ZOLL AED 3.

ZOLL AED Pro pads

The ZOLL AED Pro's main adult pads are CPR-D-padz, a one-piece set with a CPR sensor and a 5-year shelf life. It also takes CPR Stat-padz and Stat-padz II; replace any pads by the package date and after every use.

ZOLL lists four pad types for the AED Pro. CPR-D-padz (8900-0800-01) come in one piece with the CPR sensor built in. CPR Stat-padz are a two-piece set, also with the sensor, sold singly as 8900-0402 or in an 8-pack as 8900-0400, and last 24 months. Stat-padz II (8900-0801-01) are adult pads with no sensor, so there's no CPR feedback with them, and ZOLL doesn't publish a shelf life for them. Pedi-padz II are the child pads.

Keep a set of pads plugged in: if none are connected, the next standby self-test fails. Before the AED goes into service, ZOLL also says to confirm the pads haven't expired and won't expire soon. Pads are single use.

Using the ZOLL AED Pro on children

Yes. With Pedi-padz II plugged in, the ZOLL AED Pro detects the child pads and lowers its shock energy for patients under 8 or under 55 pounds.

The AED Pro is approved for both adults and children. For a patient younger than 8 or lighter than 55 pounds, use Pedi-padz II (8900-0810-01). The AED recognizes them once they're plugged in and drops its default shocks from 120, 150 and 200 joules to 50, 70 and 85 joules.

ZOLL warns against using adult pads, including CPR-D-padz, on a patient under 8. Pedi-padz II have a 2-year shelf life, far shorter than the 5 years of CPR-D-padz, so give them their own reminder.

For the general rules on child pads, ages and placement, see our guide to pediatric AED pads.

ZOLL AED Pro battery

The ZOLL AED Pro takes a disposable lithium battery pack (8000-0860-01) with a 5-year standby life, or a rechargeable pack. Rechargeable packs need a recharge or retest every 3 months, so ZOLL says not to use one if the AED will sit in standby for more than 90 days.

The AED Pro takes three kinds of battery pack. The disposable lithium manganese dioxide pack (8000-0860-01) can't be recharged. It has a 5-year standby life and typically gives about 300 full-energy shocks or 15 hours of monitoring, with CHANGE BATTERY appearing after about 200 shocks. ZOLL's accessory page lists it as 8000-0860.

The rechargeable choices are the SurePower lithium ion pack (8019-0535-01), good for about 400 shocks or 19 hours per charge, and PD 4410 sealed lead acid packs. A rechargeable pack holds its charge only about 3 months in standby, so ZOLL advises against one in an AED that may wait more than 90 days. For rechargeable packs, ZOLL suggests testing at least every 90 days and buying new ones every 18 months or sooner.

When the battery is low, the AED says CHANGE BATTERY once a minute while on; in standby it shows a red X and beeps once a minute for 30 minutes. Keep a charged spare with the AED.

In AED Log's catalog, AED Pro Pads are CPR-D-padz. If your AED uses CPR Stat-padz instead, their 24-month shelf life is shorter, so enter the date from the package. The AED Pro A-W, the aviation version, uses its own battery pack, 8000-0860-30. ZOLL doesn't say whether its pad shelf lives count from manufacture, so go by the date printed on the package.

ZOLL AED Pro self-test and status indicator

The ZOLL AED Pro tests itself once a day by default, as well as at power-on and when a battery goes in. The Ready indicator shows a green check when it's ready and a red X when it isn't.

The AED Pro tests itself whenever it's switched on or a battery goes in, and once a day in standby; the standby interval can be set anywhere from 1 to 7 days. A 5-second press of the On/Off button starts a test on demand. The test confirms that the battery has energy for at least 2 hours of monitoring plus ten full-energy shocks, and covers the pad connection, the ECG and shock circuits, the processor, the CPR sensor, the audio and the display.

The Ready indicator on the front panel shows a green check or a red X. After setting the AED up, ZOLL says to switch it off, wait 2 minutes and confirm the green check with no beeping.

If the indicator ever shows a problem, our guide to AED self-test failures and status lights covers what to do first.

ZOLL AED Pro maintenance checklist

ZOLL's checks for the AED Pro cover the case and cables, a charged battery, the pad supply and dates, and a green check on the Ready indicator. Do them before the AED goes into service and after every use, and look at the Ready indicator regularly in between.

  • The Ready indicator shows a green check, not a red X, and the AED isn't beeping.
  • The case, connector pins and cables are clean and undamaged.
  • Pads are plugged in, sealed, within their date and not close to expiring, with enough on hand.
  • Any Pedi-padz II are sealed and within their date.
  • The battery pack is charged or within its 5-year life, and a fully charged spare is with the AED.
  • Any rechargeable pack has been recharged or tested within the last 90 days.
  • The AED is stored within ZOLL's range of -22 to 158°F (-30 to 70°C).

After the ZOLL AED Pro is used

  1. Inspect the case, connector pins and cables for damage.
  2. Fit a charged battery pack.
  3. Check your pad supply and dates, and preconnect a new set of pads.
  4. Switch the AED on to run its power-on test, then switch it off.
  5. Wait 2 minutes and confirm a green check on the Ready indicator, with no beeping.

How AED Log tracks the ZOLL AED Pro

In AED Log you pick the ZOLL AED Pro from the built-in catalog, record its pads and battery with their lot numbers and dates, and get a warning before either expires, plus a monthly inspection reminder.

Each pad set and battery is its own record with its own expiration date, so a pad set or battery never lapses unnoticed. Choose the part from the catalog and its shelf life fills in the expiration date for you; you can always type the date printed on the package instead. Alerts go out by email, Slack, Teams or Discord to the people responsible for that site, and the monthly inspection checklist asks about the status indicator, the pads and the battery. See pad and battery expiration tracking and AED management for more, or see every AED model.

ZOLL AED Pro FAQ

How long do ZOLL AED Pro pads last?

ZOLL gives CPR-D-padz, the main AED Pro adult pads, a 5-year shelf life, CPR Stat-padz 24 months, and Pedi-padz II for children 2 years. It doesn't publish one for Stat-padz II. Replace any pads by the package date and after every use.

How long does the ZOLL AED Pro battery last?

The disposable lithium pack (8000-0860-01) has a 5-year standby life. Rechargeable SurePower and PD 4410 packs hold a charge about 3 months in standby, so test them every 90 days; ZOLL suggests new ones every 18 months or sooner.

Can you use the ZOLL AED Pro on a child?

Yes, for patients under 8 or under 55 pounds, with Pedi-padz II. The AED Pro detects the child pads and lowers its shock energy to 50, 70 and 85 joules. Don't use CPR-D-padz or other adult pads on a child under 8.

Is the ZOLL AED Pro discontinued?

Not as far as ZOLL shows. In October 2026 ZOLL still listed the AED Pro among its US AEDs, with live product and accessory pages, and we found no end-of-sale notice. ZOLL rates its expected service life at 5 years.

What battery does the ZOLL AED Pro take?

A disposable lithium pack (8000-0860-01) with a 5-year standby life, or a rechargeable SurePower (8019-0535-01) or PD 4410 pack. ZOLL says not to use a rechargeable pack if the AED will sit in standby more than 90 days.
