The short answer

The Avive Connect AED uses one Avive AED Pad Cartridge for adults and children; Avive's spec sheet gives it a 3.5-year shelf life. For a child, press the Child button. The battery is built in and recharged over USB-C, lasting up to 12 months per full charge. A blinking green status light means it's ready.

Key facts

  • Pads: the Avive AED Pad Cartridge (store item ACC01), 3.5-year shelf life per Avive's spec sheet; go by the use-by date on its back.
  • Children: the same cartridge; press the Child button for a child younger than 8 or lighter than 55 lb, and the shock drops from 150 to 50 joules.
  • Battery: built-in rechargeable lithium-ion that owners can't replace; a full charge covers up to 12 months on standby, or about 75 shocks.
  • Self-tests run daily, weekly and monthly, and the Connect module can report readiness over Wi-Fi or cellular.
  • Nothing in the AED blocks an expired or used cartridge, so the owner has to watch the date.

Avive Connect AED at a glance

The Avive Connect AED is a 2.1 lb, fully automatic public-access AED: the Avive AED with Avive's Connect module fitted at the factory for remote monitoring. It's on sale now; the FDA approved the Avive AED System in October 2022 and approved its use on aircraft in August 2025.

Once it has analyzed the heart rhythm, the Avive gives any needed shock on its own, and its Stand Back lights flash to keep rescuers clear. The energy is fixed: 150 joules in Adult Mode and 50 in Child Mode, with no step-up between shocks. For CPR it coaches hands-only compressions with a metronome, spoken instructions and a countdown, and the Connect screen shows matching graphics. Avive doesn't describe a sensor that measures the compressions.

The Connect module adds a touchscreen, Wi-Fi, LTE-M cellular and satellite location. It needs no setup beyond joining a Wi-Fi network, reports readiness to Avive's REALConnect cloud platform, and receives software updates over the air. Avive asks owners to register the AED at avive.life/register for tracking, warranty and update notices. With a cartridge fitted the unit weighs 2.1 lb and is rated IP54; without one it isn't protected from water.

Avive Connect AED pads

The pads are sealed inside the Avive AED Pad Cartridge, a single-use unit that snaps onto the back of the AED. Avive's spec sheet gives it a 3.5-year shelf life; replace it by the use-by date on its back, after any use, or if the sealed pads have been opened.

The cartridge holds the sealed pads, and pulling its red tab both opens them and switches the AED on. The use-by date is printed on the back of the cartridge as YYYY-MM-DD. Avive's owner's manuals give only that date, not a number of years; the 3.5-year figure comes from Avive's spec sheet and specifications page, which don't say whether it counts from manufacture.

One point matters more than usual: the AED won't stop anyone using an expired or already used cartridge. It does flag one with a red status light and beeps, and the Connect screen spells out the problem, but keeping the cartridge in date is up to the owner. A training cartridge turns the AED into a trainer that can't analyze or shock, so put the pad cartridge back after any practice session. Each new AED ships with one cartridge.

Using the Avive Connect AED on children

Yes, with the same pad cartridge. It powers up in Adult Mode every time, so for a child younger than 8 or lighter than 55 lb, press the Child button; the AED then confirms Child Mode out loud and gives 50 joules instead of 150.

There are no separate child pads or keys to buy. The same cartridge serves everyone, and the AED's approval covers patients older than 1. It powers up in Adult Mode every time, so for a child younger than 8 or lighter than 55 lb the rescuer presses the Child button. The button lights up, the AED announces the change, and the shock energy drops to 50 joules.

Avive says not to hold up a rescue trying to work out a child's exact age or weight. Because the child option is a button rather than a part, the only date an owner has to watch is the cartridge's use-by date.

Avive Connect AED battery

The Avive Connect AED has a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery that owners can't replace. Fully charged, it can stand by for up to 12 months or deliver about 75 shocks; recharge it through the USB-C port with Avive's adapter and cable.

The battery is sealed inside the AED, so there's nothing to buy or swap. Avive rates a full charge for up to 12 months on standby in normal conditions, or roughly 75 shocks at 150 joules, or 2.5 hours of running. After the low-battery warning there's still enough for 10 shocks or 20 minutes. Avive says the AED is still safe to use then, though a fully charged one is the better choice if it's close by.

Charge it only with the USB adapter and cable Avive supplies, at 32 to 113°F (0 to 45°C). A full charge takes 12 hours, and 6 hours reaches 85%. The Connect module keeps a second rechargeable battery for its screen and radios, topped up by the same cable; Avive expects 9 to 12 months from it in low-power mode and 2 to 3 months in high-power mode. Avive's simplest tip: leave the AED on its charger, somewhere at room temperature.

Avive Connect AED part numbers and shelf life

The pad cartridge is the only part an Avive Connect AED owner replaces. The battery is built in and recharged, not swapped.

Avive Connect AED self-test and status indicator

The Avive tests itself every day, every week and every month, and the Connect module can report how it's doing over Wi-Fi or cellular. Green blinks on the status light mean it's ready; red blinks or beeps mean something needs fixing.

The daily test checks the battery level, the circuits and whether the pads are ready. The weekly test adds a partial-energy charge and discharge, and the monthly test a full-energy one. The Connect module also checks its own hardware every day; a failure there brings up a notice on the screen but doesn't affect the AED's ability to shock. For a check on demand, press and keep holding the Power button for 5 seconds; the AED then reports its status out loud.

Green blinks mean ready. Red blinks or beeps point to a problem: a low battery, a cartridge that is expired, used, missing or a training cartridge, a storage temperature outside the limits, or a failed self-test. The blink rhythm also tells you about charging: 1 blink a second while it charges, a double blink every 10 seconds once it's full, and 1 blink every 15 seconds when it's unplugged. On the Connect screen, icons show Wi-Fi, cellular, location and both batteries.

If the indicator ever shows a problem, our guide to AED self-test failures and status lights covers what to do first.

Avive Connect AED maintenance checklist

Avive asks owners to check the AED's status regularly, at the status light or through Avive's connected products. In practice that means a charged AED, an in-date cartridge fitted and storage at room temperature.

  • The status light blinks green, and the AED isn't blinking red or beeping.
  • The Connect screen, or Avive's REALConnect platform, shows no notice about the AED, the cartridge or either battery.
  • A pad cartridge, not a training cartridge, is fitted, and the use-by date on its back hasn't passed.
  • The AED is charged; Avive suggests keeping it plugged into its charger.
  • It's stored clean and dry at 41 to 104°F (5 to 40°C), out of direct sunlight. After time outside 32 to 122°F (0 to 50°C), give it 24 hours at room temperature.
  • Rescue supplies, such as gloves and a CPR mask, are with the AED.

After the Avive Connect AED is used

  1. Let the AED reach Wi-Fi or cellular so it can send the rescue data to Avive.
  2. Replace the used pad cartridge with a new, in-date one.
  3. Recharge the AED with Avive's adapter and cable.

How AED Log tracks the Avive Connect AED

In AED Log you pick the Avive Connect AED from the built-in catalog, record its pads and battery with their lot numbers and dates, and get a warning before either expires, plus a monthly inspection reminder.

Each pad set and battery is its own record with its own expiration date, so a pad cartridge never lapses unnoticed. Choose the part from the catalog and its shelf life fills in the expiration date for you; you can always type the date printed on the package instead. Alerts go out by email, Slack, Teams or Discord to the people responsible for that site, and the monthly inspection checklist asks about the status indicator, the pads and the battery. See pad and battery expiration tracking and AED management for more, or see every AED model.

Avive Connect AED FAQ

How long do Avive Connect AED pads last?

Avive's spec sheet lists a 3.5-year shelf life for the pad cartridge. Replace it by the use-by date on the back of the cartridge, after any use, or if the sealed pads have been opened. The AED won't block an expired cartridge.

How long does the Avive Connect AED battery last?

The battery is built in and recharged, not replaced. Fully charged, it can stand by for up to 12 months or deliver about 75 shocks. Avive suggests keeping the AED on its charger at room temperature; a full charge takes 12 hours.

Can you use the Avive Connect AED on a child?

Yes, for patients older than 1, with the same pad cartridge. Press the Child button for a child younger than 8 or lighter than 55 lb; the AED confirms Child Mode and gives 50 joules instead of 150. It always starts in Adult Mode.

Can you replace the battery in an Avive Connect AED?

No. The lithium-ion battery is built in, and Avive says owners can't replace it. You recharge it through the USB-C port with Avive's adapter and cable, which also charges the Connect module's own battery.

How does the Avive Connect AED report that it's ready?

On the unit, a blinking green status light means ready. The Connect module also sends its status over Wi-Fi or LTE-M cellular to Avive's REALConnect cloud platform, which tracks its location too.
