The first aid kit inspection checklist
Each inspection checks five things: all required contents are present, nothing has expired, the cabinet is clean and accessible, the tamper seal is intact, and anything missing has been restocked.
- All required contents present
- No expired items
- Cabinet clean and accessible
- Tamper seal / indicator intact
- Restocked as needed
What “required contents” means depends on your workplace. OSHA requires adequate first aid supplies to be readily available (29 CFR 1910.151(b)) without listing them, and points to ANSI/ISEA Z308.1, which defines Class A kits for common workplace injuries and larger Class B kits for higher-risk sites. The checklist has a kit class field for that reason. See the first aid kit requirements guide.
The printable first aid kit inspection tag
The tag hangs on the kit or cabinet and holds a year of inspections: a row per month for the date, the inspector’s initials and whether anything was restocked.

Each tag has the kit’s ID and location, its ANSI class, the next item to expire, and the monthly checks as a reminder, so anyone opening the cabinet can see when it was last checked.
How often to inspect a first aid kit
At least monthly and after every use for most workplaces, and at least weekly on construction sites. OSHA’s general rule sets no interval, but ISEA, which maintains the ANSI standard, recommends checking kits at least monthly.
- Construction: OSHA requires kits to be checked before each job and at least weekly (29 CFR 1926.50(d)(2)).
- Other workplaces: OSHA’s general industry rule requires supplies to be adequate and readily available but sets no inspection interval; monthly is the practical baseline.
- After every use: restock right away, not at the next inspection.
- Fill in the kit’s ID, location and ANSI class.
- Open the kit, check each item against your contents list, and look for anything expired or damaged.
- Tick pass or fail for each of the five checks, and list anything to restock or that expires soon.
- Restock, then initial and date the tag.
Track first aid cabinets automatically instead
AED Log tracks each cabinet’s supplies and their expiration dates, schedules the inspection, and warns you before anything runs out of date.
- Each cabinet’s size, last restock date and inspection schedule.
- Supplies with expiration dates, with warnings before they pass.
- The same checks on any phone, started from the cabinet’s QR label.
- First aid cabinets are an add-on at $8 per cabinet per year.
